WASHINGTON (TND) — WinRed, the online payment service which processes Republican campaign contributions, crashed Thursday following a surge of donations to former President Donald Trump, his campaign announced.
The technical difficulties followed a verdict leveled against Trump in his hush money trial. A Manhattan jury found the former president guilty on 34 felony counts of falsifying business records.
Trump’s campaign took to X and explained it was working to bring the site back online.
The American people see through Crooked Joe Biden’s rigged show trial,” the campaign wrote. “So many Americans were moved to donate to President Trump’s campaign that the WinRed pages went down. We are working on getting the website back online as quickly as possible. Stay strong.”
The campaign issued a statement Friday explaining it collected a record $34.8 million across all small donors.
As of Friday morning, the site appears operable again. Donors accessing the page are greeted by a banner dubbing Trump a “political prisoner” and an image of his Fulton County, Georgia mugshot with the caption “never surrender.”
The page suggests donating in the amounts of $20.24 “if you’re supporting President Trump in 2024,” $47 “if you think Donald J. Trump is the greatest president of all time” and $100 “if you think President Trump did nothing wrong.” It also includes a button to donate $3,300, the maximum contribution allowed for individuals by the FEC.
A number of major figures took to social media to proclaim they would make larger contributions to the Trump campaign. Political commentator Laura Loomer suggested each of her one million followers donate $5 to Trump, even if they have to “go without a meal.”
“WinRed just CRASHED because so many people are donating to Trump right now,” Rep. Lauren Boebert, R-Colo, said. “The Democrats have NO IDEA what they’ve just started.”
