WAUPACA, Wis. (WBAY) – The Waupaca County Republican Party filed an ethics complaint against a Republican candidate, but the Republican Party of Wisconsin is disputing the circumstances cited in the complaint.
In a news release issued Friday, the Waupaca County Republican Party said it filed a complaint with the Wisconsin Ethics Commission against State Representative Kevin Petersen. The Waupaca County Republican Party claims Rep. Petersen has a false disclaimer on his campaign literature.
“After receiving numerous campaign flyers claiming the Republican Party of Wisconsin paid for the flyers, we felt we had to file the Ethics Complaint,” the Waupaca County Republican Party said.
However, the Republican Party of Wisconsin disputes this. The communications director for the party tells Action 2 News candidates can use its bulk mailing system, and a disclaimer saying the party paid for the flyers is not an endorsement. The party is paying for the system used to mail the flyers, not to endorse a candidate.
Action 2 News has reached out to Rep. Petersen’s office for a comment. A member of his staff told us a statement in response to this complaint will be issued Friday afternoon.
In the same news release announcing the complaint, the Waupaca County Republican Party said it endorsed Duane Wilson, Petersen’s opponent, in the race for the 57th Assembly District.
This report will be updated.
