The Democratic National Committee used Republican vice presidential nominee JD Vance’s alma mater of Ohio State against him in a highly unconventional campaign ad on Saturday. The DNC flew a plane with a banner around Michigan’s football stadium as the team was gearing up to play against the University of Texas. The banner read “JD Vance 🧡 Ohio State + Project 2025.”Vance graduated from Ohio State with a Bachelor of Arts degree before going on to graduate from Yale’s law school. In July, during Vance’s Republican National Convention acceptance speech, Vance joked with the crowd as they began chanting O-H-I-O at the beginning of his speech.”You guys, we’ve got to chill with the Ohio love,” he said. “We’ve got to win Michigan too here.”Later on in the speech, he would continue his playful jabs at Michigan. “I left the Marines after four years and went to ‘the’ Ohio State University.” Immediately as he said this, off-screen, some people can be heard booing. He added after a pause, “I’m sorry, Michigan. I had to get that in there.”It appears that the DNC is very happy to leverage the longstanding football rivalry against Vance. While Ohio is now a solidly red state on the presidential level, Michigan is a must-win state for both campaigns. The DNC also flew two other banners on Saturday around the University of Wisconsin and Penn State’s campuses. In addition to Michigan, Wisconsin and Pennsylvania are also considered crucial states for both campaigns to win by constituting the three “blue wall” states that, until 2016, reliably backed Democrats on the presidential level throughout the past few decades. The plane that flew around the University of Wisconsin had a banner that read, “Jump Around! Beat Trump + Project 2025,” as House of Pain’s song “Jump Around” played between the third and fourth quarters of the game.Meanwhile, the banner that flew around Penn State’s campus read “Beat Trump, Sack Project 2025.”Project 2025 is a 922-page plan for Donald Trump’s second term created by the conservative think tank, Heritage Foundation. Trump has sought to distance himself from the plan, while also occasionally endorsing some of its key ideas, such as gutting the federal workforce en masse. Many of the people involved in writing the 922-page document were former senior Trump administration officials. However, Democrats have repeatedly sought to tie Trump to Project 2025 throughout the past few months, including at the Democratic National Convention, as they view the policy proposals within as being unpopular. Texas would go on to beat Michigan 31-12 at the university’s Michigan Stadium. This year’s Ohio State-Michigan game is scheduled for Nov. 30. Michigan has won each of the three past games in which the two teams have faced off.
