RICHMOND, Va. (WRIC) – Virginia Democratic Senator Tim Kaine is frustrated after Republicans blocked a bill in the U.S. Senate meant to express support for abortion rights in America.
“If we are going to protect women’s reproductive freedom, reproductive freedom of all with respect to contraception and accessing IVF services, we are going to need to get 60 votes in the Senate,” Kaine said.
The bill was a “Sense of Congress” bill, meaning it wouldn’t have changed the law, but it did put every U.S. Senator on record when it comes to where they stand on abortion access.
“I’m gonna keep battling until we do protect the rights of women in every zip code in this country to make those decisions,” Kaine told reporters.
The key component of the bill said it should be the sense of Congress that the protections enshrined in Roe v. Wade should be restored and built upon. Nearly every Senate Republican opposed the bill.
In a statement, the Virginia Society for Human Life says the issue of abortion should be left with the states and Kaine’s vote “has proven that he is more concerned about promoting abortion businesses in Virginia and elsewhere than he is about protecting the health and wellbeing of women and babies.”
Despite the bill being blocked, Kaine says he plans to continue to work to pass federal abortion rights legislation that could change laws.
“I happen to believe this crisis occasioned by Dobbs is going to get worse and worse and worse and eventually we are going to want to find a national level of protection for people,” Kaine said.
