The National Republican Senatorial Committee is planning to spend big in hopes of taking control of the narrowly divided U.S. Senate, in which Democrats currently hold the slightest edge.
The NRSC says it will commit $100 million to an ad blitz that will aid its nominees in several states in which incumbent Democratic senators are trying to defend their seats.
According to Politico: “The NRSC will begin placing reservations for independent expenditures on Thursday in four states: Ohio, Nevada, Michigan and Arizona. The committee described the buys as ‘multimillion dollar’ investments in TV and digital but declined to specify the total size of them or the breakdown per state.”
Two months ago, the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee said it planned to spend $79 million in a campaign in nine states utilizing TV, radio and digital ads.
Democrats currently hold a 51-49 advantage in the upper chamber. This year 33 seats — 19 Democrats, 10 Republicans, 4 independents — are in play.
Meanwhile, the Philadelphia Inquirer says influential Democratic campaign groups are planning to spend heavily to defeat U.S. Rep. Scott Perry (R-PA) and bolster the campaign of Democrat Janelle Stelson — a former broadcast journalist and ex-Republican. But Republicans, the newspaper reports, aren’t too worried about the race.
The report says the House Majority PAC (HMP), which is a Super PAC dedicated to electing Democrats to the House of Representatives, said this spring it would spend $2.4 million on ads for the Stelson-Perry Central Pennsylvania district as part of a national $186 million.
And according to the New York Post, it’s getting hard to avoid ads connected to one particularly hot House race: “A record-shattering $23 million has been spent so far on commercials in the 16th District’s Democratic primary pitting ‘Squad’ Rep. Jamaal Bowman against Westchester County Executive George Latimer.”
According to AdImpact, that $23 million — which includes TV, radio, digital and social — is overwhelmingly due to spending by United Democracy Project. That’s a super PAC affiliated with the American Israel Public Affairs Committee (AIPAC), which is attacking Bowman over his criticisms of the Jewish state.
