SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — A dozen Utah Republicans vying to replace Mitt Romney in the U.S. Senate are set to square off Saturday for the party nomination in a race expected to reveal the brand of political conservatism that most appeals to modern voters in the state.Romney has long been the face of the party’s more moderate wing, but his retirement from the Senate opens a door for Utah’s farther-right faction. Observers are closely watching whether voters select a successor whose politics align more with Romney’s or with Utah’s other U.S. senator, conservative Mike Lee, who supports former President…

TOPEKA — Former Attorney General Derek Schmidt announced Friday he would run for the congressional seat being vacated by U.S. Rep. Jake LaTurner. Schmidt, a Republican from Independence, served 12 years as the state’s attorney general before running for governor in 2022. He lost the statewide race by two percentage points to Democratic incumbent Gov. Laura Kelly. LaTurner said earlier this month that he won’t seek reelection for the 2nd District set he has held for two terms. Schmidt said President Joe Biden has “unleashed a dangerous agenda” and that conservatives “need to stand up and fight back.” He said…

Former President Donald Trump’s campaign has been accused of spamming people with unsolicited campaign emails through third parties ahead of the 2024 election, including individuals from foreign countries who cannot vote. Some people told Newsweek about receiving “annoying” emails advancing the presumptive Republican nominee’s campaign, with one claiming they had been unable to unsubscribe from them. There was no suggestion that the email activity is a breach of electoral rules. NEW YORK (NewsNation) — A trio of Republican senators are targeting the three big food delivery services, writing a letter to Uber Eats, DoorDash and Grubhub, demanding to know what steps they’re taking to stop migrants from reportedly filling in as food delivery workers. Tennessee Sen. Marsha Blackburn, Indiana Sen. Mike Braun and North Carolina Sen. Ted Budd are investigating a New York Post report from September that claimed newly arrived immigrants in New York City were paying current delivery workers to use their accounts to earn a living. In March, Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban went to Mar-a-Lago, arguing to Donald Trump that Russia would grind Ukraine down and eventually win their war — and that the United States should accept that reality. Then the two spent hours in a ballroom listening to a cover band play Rolling Stones hits.Several weeks later, British Foreign Secretary David Cameron made a very different pitch to Trump. Over steaks at Mar-a-Lago, he warned Trump that he needed to continue providing military aid to Ukraine since Russia would not stop until it had taken over the entire country. And at dinner inside Trump…

Trump has promised to use the Department of Justice to attack critics and former allies. In several videos and speeches, the former president also laid out plans to gut the current justice system by firing “radical Marxist prosecutors that are destroying America.”“I will appoint a real special prosecutor to go after the most corrupt president in the history of the United States of America, Joe Biden, and the entire Biden crime family,” Trump said in June 2023 remarks. “I will totally obliterate the Deep State.”Trump said in a campaign video last year that he would reinstate a 2020 executive order…

Kari Lake, the Republican candidate for the U.S. Senate seat being vacated by Kyrsten Sinema, is having a very difficult time figuring out just what it is she stands for, depending upon who she’s talking to. That’s leading her to swing wildly from the far-right fringes steeped in conspiracy theories to trying to put on a “moderate” face to consolidate support. Abortion is the most obvious example of Lake’s confusion, where she’s flip-flopped between absolute bans,  allowing each individual state to decide, and having compassion for all women’s choices.  Now she’s landed right back on the far edge of the…

Most GOP senators have fallen in line with Donald Trump’s 2024 campaign to return to the White House, starting from the top with Minority Leader Mitch McConnell. They’re with him despite everything, including Jan. 6 when he unleashed a mob on the Capitol that threatened their physical safety, if not their lives.  But they are hanging on to the pretense that they’ll be able to constrain him by continuing to refuse to nuke the filibuster for him, something Trump demanded when he was in the White House.  Axios reports that they “are locking arms to defend the filibuster,” pointing out that both…
