Good morning. It is Saturday, Sept. 7, and no, this God-awful heat wave in L.A. isn’t over yet. Here’s what’s happening in Opinion. For the first time in his life, Donald Trump will be on TV without being the center of attention. Most people will be watching the person standing next to him. The eagerly awaited (and nearly canceled) presidential debate between him, the twice-impeached ex-commander in chief, and Kamala Harris, the vice president, is the last single event we can count on to influence this deadlocked election before ballots start being counted Nov. 5.After nine years of MAGA pageantry, this…

Photo: Bill Clark/CQ-Roll Call/Getty Images It’s the stuff of #Resistance dreams: Kamala Harris, the prosecutor, gets onstage in Philadelphia next Tuesday across from Donald Trump, the felon, and proceeds to brutally expose him as a racist and sexist con man who’s been lying to the American people ever since his famous escalator ride nine years ago. Only that’s not how she or her debate-prep team sees her main objective for the  debate — at all. In mock-debate sessions in Pittsburgh, planning meetings in Washington, and briefing-book cram sessions between public events on the campaign trail, the vice-president and her aides have kept much of their…

The public furor continues over Donald Trump’s behavior during a visit to Arlington National Cemetery on Aug. 26, 2024.Since that visit to the U.S. military burial ground outside Washington, D.C., news reports and campaign photos have emerged showing the former president grinning widely and giving a “thumbs-up” gesture while standing behind the grave of an American serviceman killed during the 2021 U.S. evacuation from Afghanistan. Visible in those images, too, are the graves of two U.S. Army Green Berets. The Trump campaign later released video showing images of him in Arlington National Cemetery with audio criticizing the Biden administration for its…

House Republicans on Friday unveiled legislation to avoid a partial government shutdown at the end of the month and fund the government until March 28, when a new president and Congress would be able to decide agency spending and priorities for the 2025 fiscal year. However, Republicans added a contentious immigration issue to the short-term spending bill, requiring states to obtain proof of citizenship, such as a birth certificate or passport, when people register to vote. Inclusion of the citizenship requirement is a nonstarter in the Senate, complicating prospects for the spending bill’s passage. At least one Republican, conservative Rep. Matt Rosendale…

PITTSBURGH (AP) — Kamala Harris and Donald Trump are veering sharply in how they gear up for Tuesday’s presidential debate, setting up a showdown that reflects not just two separate visions for the country but two politicians who approach big moments very differently. She’s been working with aides since Thursday and chose a venue that allows the Democratic nominee the option of mingling with swing-state voters.Trump, the Republican nominee, publicly dismisses the value of studying…

With only six weeks before voting begins in Washington’s November election, state Republican Party Chair Jim Walsh acknowledged that time is tight for his party’s legal challenge against recount results in the state lands commissioner primary. On Thursday, the party filed a lawsuit against King County over the use of an online system to aid voters in fixing, or “curing,” signature problems on their ballots, allowing them to be counted. With the lawsuit, the party is trying to get about 2,000 ballots invalidated – more than enough to potentially overturn the primary results. The party filed the suit in Snohomish…
