PORTLAND, Maine (WMTW) – Susan Abercrombie, a longtime public servant and current candidate for Maine Senate, has died.
Abercrombie, a Republican from Portland, was running against Rachel Talbot-Ross, the current Speaker of the Maine House, for the Maine Senate District 28 seat.
Under state law, Abercrombie’s name has now been removed from the ballot, and the Republican Party has until noon on Sept. 3 to nominate a replacement candidate.
Republicans are praising the life of Abercrombie.
“Sue Abercrombie was one of the most selfless and honorable members of our Portland Republican City Committee,” said Ryan McMann, the chair of the Portland Republican City Committee. “In a city that is overwhelmingly Democrat, Sue would time and time again sacrifice her time, money, and name to champion conservative values, despite the odds against her winning an office or race.”
Abercrombie was elected to the Republican State Committee earlier this year.
McCann said she died unexpectedly while helping a friend in another state recover from surgery.
“Sue Abercrombie embodied selfless service to conservative values and she will be greatly missed by those of us in the City, County, and State Republican Committees,” said McCann.
“Sue Abercrombie was an inspiration,” said Charles Ellis, the vice-chair of the Cumberland County Republican Committee. “Sue was never afraid to speak her mind even if it was unpopular because she believed she was right and that people needed to hear it. In an era where conservatives in Maine are afraid to speak out for fear of losing their job or their friends, Sue stood apart and spoke up for the views and values she and many others held.”
